Ruth trained at Edinburgh College of Art as an illustrator and graduated in 1991. After spending two years as a book illustrator and both writing and illustrating her own book, The Scottish Farm Cookery Book, Ruth became a full time watercolour painter.
Working mainly in watercolour and charcoal, Ruth is motivated to capture the life in her subject matter, whether a living creature or the exquisite beauty of flowers. Certainly a love of the countryside, plants and wildlife has always been evident in her work, as well as being inspired by 17th & 18th century artists such as Alexander Marshal. Ruth’s work is currently mainly flowers although she does continue to paint game birds and animals.
Ruth has exhibited many times in London and regularly in New York, Florida and Atlanta. In the past six years she has held an annual exhibition in her own gallery at home, where beautiful and extensive gardens create the perfect backdrop for her sell-out exhibitions. Her work is held in collections throughout the world.
Ruth lives with her husband and two daughters in the Scottish Highlands, together with two golden retrievers, a dozen peacocks and many geese and wildlife; amongst beautiful mature gardens which provide constant inspiration for her work.
